US Open: Who are the favorites going into this weekend?

Date:

Rory McIlroy was able to successfully defend his RBC Canadian Open crown this weekend, just in time for the upcoming US Open at Brookline, which is hosting the event for the first time since 1988.

If you’re looking for value, this week is going to be tougher than ever. Majors not only have the most densely populated field in terms of elite talent, but there’s also that magical element that nobody can predict who is going to etch their names into the history books.

If you’re among the very best in the world, have experience here, and have a hot run of form, chances are you’ll be in the running come Sunday.

The US Open favorites

Rory McIlroy (+1000) is the leading favorite going into this week and understandably so after his excellent performance in Toronto. Justin Thomas is available at a similar price (+1100) and choosing between the two would be extremely difficult. However, not only has Thomas won a major this year, but he’s also rallied to 4 top-10’s since the Masters where he finished 8th. Add in the fact he seems to have ice in his veins whenever he’s in the mix on a Sunday, and I think he has a slight edge here.

You can’t talk about favorites and not mention last year’s winner, John Rahm (+1200). The Spaniard has also had an impressive season thus far. He won the Mexico open and most recently placed 10th at The Memorial. He also has the strength of being both accurate and long off the tee, two very favorable traits around this course.

World #1 Scottie Scheffler is a little further out at +1400 and has seemingly cooled off a little from his dominant form early on. However, if cooling off is 4 top-20’s and a single missed cut, that temperature is still hot. He came 7th at this event last year and has 4 top-10s in majors over the last three years. Don’t write him off. If you want value on the world’s best golfer, here’s your chance.

Xander Schauffele is a name worth noting here. He’s +1600 and his history at this event includes FIVE CONSECUTIVE TOP TENS. That’s not a typo. Add in a win at the Zurich Classic and someone who ranks 13th in approach, and you have a real challenger.
